Wear&Care®

A small solution with huge perspectives

Wear&Care® is a small sensor that registers the amount of fluid in the diaper. When the fluid in the diaper has reached a predetermined level, a small transmitter, located on the outside of the diaper, notifies personnel that the diaper needs to be changed. This eliminates the need for continuous diaper checks and insures that the diaper is changed at the right time.

This eliminates the need for continuous diaper checks and insures that the diaper is changed at the right time.

To change the diaper at exactly the right time, not too early and not too late, provides many advantages to users and related personnel. The users are comfortable and feel more dignified. The personnel saves time and effort on unnecessary diaper changes and it enables them to cut down on confrontations with users who do not like to get their diaper changed.

Wear&Care® will also positively affect the resources spent and the amount of care possible to give in the given institution. The reason for this is that the solution makes it easier to plan the diaper change, adapt the diaper size and optimize the diaper procurements with the user’s factual needs.

Wear&Care® will not only improve the quality of life and care for the users; it will also contribute with significant economical perspectives.

Denmark spends more than two billion DKK on care of citizens with incontinence; staff expenses and diaper purchases are two of the biggest expenditures. These expenses will rise considerably in the coming years due to demographic changes. In 2044, Denmark will have an elderly population of 1.5 million, which are 600,000 more than today. It is obvious that this increase will require more resources – and more intelligent welfare technological solutions. That is, if we want to retain our current level of care for the sick and elderly.

SUMA Care introduces the solution: Wear&Care®. We do not claim that we can solve this considerable challenge alone; however, we can make a major contribution. Wear&Care® can help maintain the same level of care for the users, while steadying the expenditures on an equal or lower level. We can do this even with a growing number citizens suffering from incontinence in the population.

Fewer diapers, better adaption, stringent resource use

How? By identifying the exact diaper usage, size and type for the individual user.

Well-timed diaper changes will typically translate to a reduction in diaper size for the user. Furthermore, Wear&Care® can help reduce the diaper usage by decreasing the amount of unnecessary diaper changes, amongst other, by offering toilet visits as an alternative. We have confirmed this numerous time while testing Wear&Care®. Finally, the adaption of optimized diaper sizes and well-timed changes can counteract resource-heavy consequences of incorrect diaper use, such as rashes, infections and bedsores.

Correct diaper usage, knowledge about the users’ daily rhythm, and an overview of the diaper consumption of an entire caring institution, will make it easier to plan diaper purchases and workflows. In other words, reduced but more targeted diaper usage, adapted to the individual’s daily rhythm, allows better opportunities to plan resource consumption. This makes it easier to match the actual needs of the users and to use the personnel resources in the best possible way.

Last but not least: A reduction of superfluous diaper changes will help create a better physical and psychological working environment for the personnel, caused by a lower amount of demanding transfers and less confrontational situations between personnel and users. A better working environment will positively affect sick leave, and help with personnel retention and recruitment.

Valuable information gathering

Wear&Care® records how much fluid is deposited in the diaper, and when fluid deposit is happening, this way enables the caring personnel to discontinue doing this manually. The automatically data collection has several advantages.

Wear&Care® increases the knowledge about the users individual needs

The information Wear&Care® collects can be used to work out individual forecast, which provides an overview of the individual users’ daily rhythm and needs. Knowledge about when and how often the diaper have to be changed, to ensure optimal use, will also allow opportunity for adapting work flows to ensure optimized handling of diaper changes.

Besides fluid content, the sensor in Wear&Care® will also record temperature and movement. This additional information provides opportunity to prevent fall damages and dehydration, in addition to reduce secondary diseases such as bedsores, skin irritation and urinary infection.

Changes in a user’s urination pattern and temperature can be signs of a beginning urinary infection. The information allows the caring personnel to commence treatment as soon as possible.

Wear&Care® is an asset is research

Besides increasing the knowledge level in institutions, the recorded data can be used in a wider healthcare context and for research purposes, which to help with prevention and treatment of incontinence and other related secondary diseases. All the data that Wear&Care® records are encrypted, in compliance with the ”E.U. Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC)” and the Danish Data Protection Agency, and stored in a database. The database helps researchers increase their knowledge about incontinence, including the connection between diaper usage and secondary diseases.
